Lodge NewsPosted by Fountain Lake Lodge Blog Tue, July 16, 2013 19:37:20 Summer is most definitely here. The sun shone over Wimbledon and over in
France Le Tour is well under way. Speaking of the Tour de France, it
acts as a reminder that in 12-months time the world’s most prestigious
bike race will start not far from Fountain Lake Lodge in Yorkshire. The
Lodge is the perfect base to enjoy this top class sporting event and
see the likes of Mark Cavendish, Chris Froome...and who knows, may be
even Sir Bradley Wiggins.
Seeing these top athletes might not be
for everyone. Some of us enjoy the more relaxing side of life. The
recently opened Bistro and Swimming Pool on the Goosewood Park site
should help laze away those sunny summer days.
Another way to
spend those summer days is by the lake that is just off the lodge deck.
So, if a day fishing is the thing for you, Fountain Lake Lodge might
just be paradise.
Away from the Lodge itself, there is so much going on in the York area in the coming months:
On
the 4th, August it is Thunder Day at the Air Museum in Elvington, where
you’ll not only be able to see classic jets and propeller planes, but
they will be fired up so you can experience the roar of these aircraft -
www.yorkshireairmuseum.org
From
thundering aircraft, to a thundering train. The fastest ever steam
engine - Mallard - turned 75 this year. The National Railway Museum has
been the at the heart of these celebrations. Don’t worry if you missed
seeing Mallard and her sister trains when they were recently at the
Museum, they will be back in the autumn. Go and see this wonder piece of
engineering between the 26th, October and 8th, November. http://www.nrm.org.uk/PlanaVisit/Events/mallard75.aspx
York is steeped in myth and magic, so where better to see The Legend of
King Arthur production than at the York Theatre Royal? This family show
doesn’t just bring the world of King Arthur to life on the stage, but
there are other activities to enjoy around the theatre. Jousting, the
Stocks and Birds of Prey will be free to enjoy throughout the day. The
show runs from 24th, July until the 31st, August.
Carrying on in
a similar theme, the Yorkshire Medieval Festival gets into full swing
on the 3rd, August until the 30th, August. A recent addition to the York
calendar, it promises to bring the Medieval period to life with
re-enactments, falconry, archery and many more events. It is one not to
miss - http://jorvik-viking-centre.co.uk/festivals/yorkshire-medieval-festival/

Lodge NewsPosted by Fountain Lake Lodge Blog Sat, April 27, 2013 14:32:02 It
has been a while since our last blog, and with that break means there
is so much more to say.
In
the upcoming weeks and months, York will be brimming with events and
activities and Fountain Lake Lodge will be a perfect location to
enjoy it all.
York
has for a long time been associated with trains. The city has always
been easy to get to by train and is also home to the National Railway
Museum. Possibly the pride and joy of the collection at the Museum is
that king of speed from the age of steam - Mallard. It is to this
very day the world’s fastest steam locomotive, and at 75 years of
age the Museum is rightly celebrating this wonderful feat of
engineering.
Between
July 3rd and 17th, enjoy the Mallard 75 event at the National Railway
Museum. And great family day out and best of all, entry is free.
Sticking
with the age of steam, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is putting
on its 40th Anniversary Spring Steam Gala this year. 11 steam
locomotives will be appearing up and down the North Yorkshire Moors
Railways line between the 3rd and 12th of May. Like the Mallard
celebrations at the National Railway Museum, the Spring Gala will be
something not to miss.
While
a day out on a steam train might not be for everyone, good food might
well be. York is famous for producing Chocolate and has its own
Chocolate dedicated to it. But it isn’t just Chocolate that
impresses ‘foodies’ in the city. The York Food Festival is
becoming a must attend event for those who love locally sourced food.
The festival has two events, the Spring Food and Drink Festival in
June, and the main event in September.
This
year’s spring event which takes place over the weekend of the 1st
and 2nd of June, promises to be a mouthwatering affair. Here is
something to whet the appetite.
Regardless
of whether your visit to Fountain Lake Lodge and York is while a
major event takes place, getting informed about the rich history of
the city is easy. There are many walking tours, Ghost Walks to take,
as well as bus and boat tours as well.
A
bus tour of around 45 minutes to an hour will cost around £10 for
adults and £4 for children.
When
it comes to boat cruises there are a number of options. You could
take one of the normal informative city boat tours, or perhaps a
lunch or dinner cruise. If you are feeling particularly nautical,
there is also a chance to hire and drive your own motor boat up and
down the River Ouse.

Lodge NewsPosted by Fountain Lake Lodge Blog Mon, February 25, 2013 19:33:15 Welcome to the second edition of our blog post from Fountain Lake Lodge. It has been a cold and long winter in Yorkshire with plenty of snow, as with the rest of the UK. During these chilly days the Lodge has been no less enchanting and has often been a winter wonderland with snow surrounding the lake quite often over the past few months.
But as February ends and March approaches there are small signs of the move to spring. In York the daffodils are waiting to burst open and display a sea of yellow on the city walls - a real sight to behold. At the Lodge the geese have been very noisy, so look out for little ones soon.
As the temperatures try to rise, and with spring and summer approaching there, will be so much to enjoy in 2013. For fishing enthusiasts there is the prospect of enjoying a day around the lake and only having to go a few metres from the Lodge’s deck.
If fishing isn’t your passion then the York area and the lodge site will provide lots to do. On the Goosewood Park site itself work is taking place for a new Bistro and a Swimming Pool. These will hopefully be up and running by the summer.
If you are planning to get out and about in the York area there is so much to do, even if you are only with us for a short time.
To give you some ideas, how about this from Travel Journalist from The Independent, Simon Calder? Here is his ‘48 Hours in York’.

The New Year is upon us and our new year’s resolution is to keep you
up-to-date on what is happening at Fountain Lake Lodge and the York
area.
To start 2013 in the right way, we have a special offer. Book before the February, 1st and pay 2012 prices.

At
the moment the lodge and the Goosewood Holiday Park site is closed as
always for January, but will be reopening in February and will be ready
to welcome more guests. So while it might not be possible to enjoy the
lodge just at the moment, here are some reasons to come and visit
through the rest of the year. Here are 5 great events in the York area
in 2013 to whet your appetite:
Guinness World Records: Totally Bonkers Science. February, 15th 2013. York, Barbican Centre.
From
the people who produced Braniac Live and Science Museum Live, comes a
live event where Science meets World Record attempts. It should be
an explosive night!
The
Jorvik Viking Centre is one of York’s biggest and best attractions, but
it gets even better during Europe’s biggest Viking festival. The event
has a packed programme to interest everyone and closes with a
spectacular final battle between two Viking tribes, all set to a
stunning sound and light show at the Eye of York. This is something not
to be missed. http://jorvik-viking-centre.co.uk/festivals/
York Chocolate Festival - March, 29th - April, 1st 2013.
If
you have a sweet tooth then York is the place for you, especially
during the Chocolate Festival. All across the city there are events to
delight the taste buds of everyone. Last year’s festival including a
huge Easter Egg Hunt, chocolate making workshops, a chocolate
market...and even a ‘Death By Chocolate’ murder mystery evening. Expect
delicious delights this year as well.
4: Dragon Boat Challenge: July, 4th 2013. The River Ouse, between Scarborough Bridge and Lendal Bridge.
Forget
the Oxford and Cambridge’s boat race, this annual event has been
drawing the crowds in for years in York. Now in its 11th year, the event
keeps getting bigger and bigger. Last year it raised well over £600,000
for charity, so not only is a bit of a different day out in York, it is
also for a good cause.
5: Illuminating York Festival - late October 2013.
York
is an iconic city with many well-known landmarks. During the
Illuminating York Festival, they will be lit up in dramatic and
innovative ways, including projections on the walls of York Minster. It
will be a sight to behold.
It
is never too early to book at Fountain Lake Lodge and with the 2014
Tour de France starting in Yorkshire, there is more reason than ever.
With
the beautiful Yorkshire countryside right on the doorstep of the Lodge,
bring your bike and find out first hand why the county has been picked
for this world class sporting event.
Even if you aren’t coming
to Yorkshire for the race, there is so much for cyclists to enjoy in the
area. Not only are the North York Moors only a stone’s throw away but
York has its own Cycle Show which takes place on the June, 22nd and 23rd
2013.
Even
if these events are not for you there are still plenty of reasons to
visit Fountain Lake Lodge. Whether it be for the fishing lake, the
wonderful Yorkshire countryside or just to get away from it all for a
while, we hope you can enjoy a stay at the lodge.
